| | | | | | | Barbara Borzi joined Eucentre in September 2004 after spending a long period abroad. She covers a Senior Researcher position and is head of Eucentre’s Seismic Risk Section. Barbara Borzi graduated in Civil Engineering with Structural orientation in July 1995. The same year she started a PhD in earthquake engineering at “Politecnico di Milano”, where she was conferred the title of Doctor in Earthquake Engineering in February 1999. “Inelastic Force and Displacement Spectra for Modern Seismic Design and Assessment and Methods of Assessment” was the subject treated for her PhD thesis, under the supervision of Professor E. Faccioli and Professor G. M. Calvi. After the PhD she spent 10 months at Imperial College London, where she obtained a Post Doctorate in “Non-linear Dynamic Analysis of RC Structure under Earthquake Loads” and a paid lectureship position. After obtaining the Post Doctorate she decided to switch to the industry. For 2 years and a half she worked as a Senior Engineer at EQE International ltd. (currently ABS Consultancy), Warrington head office. Finally, at EQE she was promoted to Technical Leader of the Analysis Section with the task to develop and lead projects related to civil and mechanical engineering for the qualification of civil structures and equipment, subjected to earthquake loads. In March 2002 Barbara Borzi left the UK for Germany, where she kept working as a Stress Analyst for WTI GmbH in Jülich, mainly operating in the risk assessment of nuclear power plants, till the end of August 2004. In the years spent abroad Barbara Borzi became familiar and proficient with the use of several Finite Element Codes. Thank to her good theoretical FE background, she has been developing user-defined materials and elements to tailor commercial FE codes to specific applications. Her main research interests are (i) evaluation of earthquake risk at urban or regional scale of structures and infrastructures, (ii) implementation of mechanics based methods for the definition of seismic vulnerability at urban scale, (iii) modelling of non linear behaviour of structures subjected to seismic loads, (iv) implementation of simplified analysis methods to be adopted when detailed analyses cannot be afforded for lack of data or to heavy computational effort.
