I am currently working on development of the PBEE (Performance Based Earthquake Engineering) based onPEER Center (Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center) in order to improve the accuracy of the approach based on VPSHA (Vector-valued Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis) instead of Scalar PSHA. The current approach which has been recently summarized also in a code format (FEMA P-58), considers a scalar Intensity Measure (IM, e.g. spectral acceleration of the first mode period), however, studies have shown that a single elastic IM could not be efficient and sufficient in structural response estimation which will lead to less accurate loss estimations.
Moreover, many studies have suggested that, the damage to the structural or non-structural components is highly correlated with the Maximum Inter-storey Drift Ratio (MIDR). As such, in practice, seismic loss assessment of the structures are related to just the MIDR, accordingly. However, the losses that occur in an earthquake could be related to various locations (e.g. Maximum Inter story drift in all of the stories) in the building or could be interpreted by other Engineering Demand Parameters (e.g. Maximum Absolute Storey Acceleration, Maximum Residual Drift, etc) making it difficult to estimate such losses based on a single response measure. Therefore, intuitively the accuracy in the estimation of losses might improve significantly if more than a single response measure is used to capture the different aspects of the damage in the structure.
In my thesis, we would like to firstly provide tools in order to be able to calculate VPSHA based on the scalar PSHA results of OpenQuake. Secondly, extend the PEER based PBEE using vector IM rather than the conventional scalar IM. As part of this research, it is intended to also look at the difference in the losses measured considering complete vector-valued IMs combined with a vector of EDPs, in comparison with other possible such combinations (i.e. scalar IM with single EDP or Vector IMs with single EDP). The final results of such research and similar more comprehensive research studies could provide a better insight in the approach in order to more accurately assess the seismic risk of the structures.
