Igor Lanese is working since 2007 in the field of theoretical and experimental research in earthquake engineering. The main topics of his research are the study and the development of advanced methods for seismic engineering and the dynamic response and retrofit of existing buildings.
He is mainly interested in the most advanced experimental techniques in seismic engineering, such as the real-time dynamic hybrid testing technique, shake table testing and dynamic testing of modern devices for seismic protection (isolation devices, viscous dampers, shock transmitters, etc.). Among his main interests there is the numerical and experimental evaluation of the seismic response of  existing R.C. buildings and retrofit techniques based on fiber-reinforced materials. Activities related to the existing buildings topic are the experience in the post-earthquake damage assessment performed after the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake and  the course oriented to professional engineers, held in 2008-2009-2010-2013, on the damage assessment of buildings and churches.
He has been involved in several national and international research projects (NEARB, E-FAST, SERIES, STEP, DR.HOUSE, STRIT, ecc.), mainly concerning the topics listed above
