NAE cited him \u201cfor large-scale dynamic testing of buildings that has advanced structural earthquake engineering.\u201d<br \/>\nA native of Japan, Nakashima completed his Ph.D. in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lehigh.edu\/cee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">civil engineering<\/a>\u00a0at Lehigh and then returned home. He joined the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of Kyoto University in 1992, was the Institute\u2019s director from 2011 to 2013 and serves now as professor.<br \/>\nNakashima has published more than 40 book chapters and nearly 200 technical articles. In 2014, he received the George W. Housner Medal from the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute for making a \u201cprofound impact on the advancement of earthquake engineering\u201d and for \u201cseminal work in the development of hybrid simulation.\u201d Hybrid simulation is a type of structural testing that combines physical experiments with numerical simulation.<br \/>\nNakashima has also received the\u00a0<b>Moisseiff Award<\/b>\u00a0and the\u00a0<b>Ernest E. Howard Award<\/b>\u00a0from the American Society of Civil Engineers and the\u00a0<b>Special Achievement Award<\/b>\u00a0from the American Institute of Steel Construction. He is a member of the Engineering Academy of Japan.<br \/>\nAt Lehigh, Nakashima\u2019s adviser was the late\u00a0<b>Le-Wu Lu<\/b>, the Bruce G. Johnston Professor emeritus of structural engineering.<br \/>\nKurt Pfitzer recently talked to Nakashima about his education at Lehigh and his career as a structural engineer. He combines this role with a successful career as a photographer, painter and sculptor.<br \/>\nHe began his photographic career in the early 1980s, working on reportages and collaborating with national magazines such as Abitare and Corriere della Sera Illustrato. He later turned to authorial projects focusing on landscapes, nature and society.
