Structural monitoring<\/h1>\n<\/div><\/div>

Structural monitoring is a multidisciplinary field that requires expertise in structural engineering, electronics, and information technology. The Eucentre Foundation has many years of experience in designing and implementing optimised, customised monitoring systems for buildings, infrastructure and industrial plants, offering solutions tailored to specific customer requirements.
\nEucentre’s platforms support both short- and long-term monitoring operations, integrating traditional electrical sensors, such as accelerometers and strain gauges, with state-of-the-art wireless, fibre optic and satellite (GNSS) technologies. Acquired data can be processed locally or in the cloud and used in numerical models to assess structural safety and plan possible interventions.<\/p>\n

A real-time monitoring system is often indispensable for effectively managing emergency situations. In some cases, such as with RIR systems, it is required by international regulations. With the right expertise and a modest investment, these systems can be adapted for continuous structural monitoring or to provide an early warning in the event of an earthquake.
\nMonitoring enables the state of the structural system to be characterised and any degradation or changes in dynamic properties to be detected, both globally and locally, even after events such as industrial accidents. Advanced data analysis techniques can be used to develop predictive maintenance plans based on continuously acquired data, offering an alternative to the traditional scheduled maintenance approach.<\/p>\n

Eucentre supports customers throughout the entire process, from the detailed design of the monitoring system and software development for data analysis and interpretation to installation and testing. It also designs decision support systems (DSS) for facility and infrastructure managers, incorporating advanced seismic early warning functions. These systems include the installation of seismic stations, real-time monitoring, pre-alert algorithms, and the calculation of warning thresholds. The risk-based DSS take into account the seismic response of the system to be protected.<\/p>\n

Structural monitoring of the Cathedral of Pavia<\/em>
\nImportant Renaissance building includes one of the most significant octagonal vaults of Italy. Affected by various and serious structural pathologies, it has undergone severe reinforcement works for several years, with the installation of a metal hoop and the shoring of the tambour and of the vault. The works were monitored during the entire period by a data acquisition system created by Prof. Macchi and installed by ISMES. Eucentre has created and installed the monitoring system currently in use for the long-term control of both relative and absolute displacements.<\/p>\n

Structural monitoring of the San Pietro Cathedral<\/em>
\nEucentre collaborated to the restoration of the San Pietro Cathedral in Rome when the marble fa\u00e7ade was sloping towards the below square, and it was slowly and dangerously rotating. The strengthening work consisted in the installation of a post-tensioning system in order to bring back the fa\u00e7ade to its original position. Eucentre monitored the entire work and continued the monitoring during the following years.<\/p>\n

Structural monitoring of the Malpensa Airport<\/em>
\nDuring the works of enlargement of the airport, tests have been carried out for the dynamic identification with forced excitation on the metal structure of a pedestrian connecting tunnel. The experimental campaign had the dual aim of calibrating the numerical model of the structure and verify the potential impact on the dynamic behavior and possible resonances caused by walking.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
