This is the context for the <strong>Bearing Test System (BTS<\/strong>), an advanced experimental infrastructure developed and operational at the Eucentre Foundation laboratories in Pavia.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What is the Bearing Test System?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The BTS is a multifunctional test system designed to perform tests on full-scale seismic isolation and dissipation devices. Its special feature lies in its ability to apply <strong>static and dynamic loads <\/strong>with <strong>five controlled degrees of freedom<\/strong>: vertical and longitudinal translations, as well as roll, pitch, and yaw rotations. Additionally, an optional configuration allows the degrees of freedom to be extended to six, enabling complete three-dimensional movements.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Technical Specifications<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Maximum static vertical load<\/strong>: 40,000 kN<\/li>\n<li><strong>Additional dynamic vertical load<\/strong>: 10,000 kN<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maximum horizontal force<\/strong>: 2,000 kN (up to 2,800 kN in alternative configuration)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maximum horizontal displacement<\/strong>: \u00b1480 mm<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dimensions of baseboard<\/strong>: 1.7 m x 4.3 m<\/li>\n<li><strong>Control system<\/strong>: real-time digital, with PID control and delta-P feedback<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Objectives and applications<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The BTS is designed for:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Validating numerical models <\/strong>used in the prediction of seismic response<\/li>\n<li><strong>Testing innovative <\/strong>insulation and dissipation <strong>devices<\/strong>, such as elastomeric insulators, sliding insulators on a curved surface, and viscous dissipators<\/li>\n<li><strong>Supporting the development of technical standards <\/strong>through high-quality experimental data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Applications range from tests on structural joints and prefabricated elements to tests on advanced seismic protection devices.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>A state-of-the-art experimental infrastructure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The BTS is part of the Eucentre Foundation&#8217;s experimental laboratories, which also include high-performance vibration tables, dynamic test systems, and advanced acquisition tools. These infrastructures enable large-scale testing under conditions that closely resemble real-world ones, helping to reduce design uncertainties and increase structural resilience.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>International Collaborations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eucentre, thanks to the use of BTS, has participated in European projects such as <a href=\"https:\/\/sera-ta.eucentre.it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SERA <\/strong>(Seismology and Earthquake Engineering Research Infrastructure Alliance for Europe)<\/a>, which promoted transnational access to experimental infrastructures of excellence. It also collaborates with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/eng\/nheri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NHERI <\/strong><\/a>(Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure) in the United States, consolidating its role in international seismic research.<br \/>\nThanks to the presence of the Bearing Test System among its test infrastructures, the Eucentre Foundation confirms its leadership in scientific experimentation applied to earthquake engineering.
