DESRACK Project: experimental tests for safer storage racks under seismic conditions

From September 8th to 17th, 2025, Eucentre’s laboratories hosted an experimental campaign within the framework of the DESRACK project, coordinated by the University of Pavia and IUSS, in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano and University of Salento.

The tests, performed on steel pallet racks mounted on our 1D 140-ton shake table, aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of dissipative devices designed to improve the seismic performance of storage racks.

The campaign employed a natural accelerogram (Duzce, Turkey, 12 November 1999, Bolu station – PGA 0.82 g), initially applied at 20% of its intensity and then increased in 20% increments. After each run with the Duzce accelerogram, a Random signal vibration test was carried out to assess changes in the dynamic properties and vibration modes of the structure.

For data collection, advanced instrumentation was employed, including LVDTs to measure connection rotations, 3D accelerometers placed at various levels to record accelerations, and an optical acquisition system to track displacements near the connections and at mid-height of the columns.

The logistics and industrial sector is particularly exposed to earthquake-induced damage, with severe potential impacts on both safety and economic activities. DESRACK addresses this challenge by providing innovative solutions to reduce risks and increase the resilience of storage systems, which are essential for many production environments.

This project marks a significant step towards optimising structural performance in seismic scenarios. It paves the way for future developments, including the forthcoming SAVERACK project, which will expand and enhance the current results.
