Prof. Iunio Iervolino Continues the Milan Seminar Series on Seismic Hazard

Banner Corso Analisi di pericolosità sismica e progettazione strutturale parte II: lo stato dell’arte 24 marzo 2026

Following the first lecture focused on the classical probabilistic framework, Prof. Iunio Iervolino will deliver the second seminar in the series on seismic hazard analysis and structural design, entitled “Seismic Hazard Analysis and Structural Design – Part II: State of the Art.”

The seminar will take place on March, 24th, 2026 at 2:30 pm at the Milan Section of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (via Alfonso Corti 12, third floor), with remote access available.

Professor at the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II and the Università di Pavia, and Director of Science of the Eucentre Foundation, Prof. Iervolino will address recent research developments aimed at overcoming – where deemed necessary – the intrinsic limitations of the classical probabilistic seismic hazard approach.

The lecture will critically examine potential directions for future generations of building codes, discussing advances in ground-motion intensity measures, the reintroduction of space–time clustering of earthquakes, hazard requirements for cumulative damage and infrastructure ageing, vector and conditional hazard for cascading effects, near-field phenomena such as source directivity, hazard-consistent design spectra for input selection, and time-variant occurrence models at the source level.

The seminar will conclude with a brief discussion on seismic hazard in the context of moving beyond the current performance-based framework, with particular emphasis on risk-oriented design.
