The Italian edition of “The Art of Seismic Design (from forces to displacements and losses)” by Gian Michele Calvi, Professor at IUSS Pavia and a key international figure in the earthquake engineering community, is now available for free download.
Titled “L’arte di progettare per i terremoti. Dalle forze agli spostamenti alle perdite”, this volume is more than a translation: it is a reworked edition explicitly written for native Italian readers. Initially published in English as part of the CSI/IAEE Master Series, the book was distributed to all participants at the 18th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (WCEE2024) and remains available in printed form from our bookstore.
Blending technical depth with historical context and personal insight, the book reflects on the evolution of seismic design, offering a fresh and often provocative take on the conceptual foundations of the discipline. It is particularly valuable for young engineers and researchers open to exploring ideas beyond the boundaries of current practice and codes.
“A technical monograph can become a novel, taking shape from the flesh-and-blood figures of those tormented by the pursuit of knowledge, able to grasp and elaborate conceptual and applicable solutions.”
