The BORIS (Cross BOrder RISk assessment for increased prevention and preparedness in Europe) project, funded by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), assessed seismic and flood risks and their potential impact in border areas between countries participating in the European Union’s civil protection mechanism. The project aimed to improve disaster safety in these areas by developing a shared methodology for single and multi-risk assessment, which was then integrated into a bespoke web platform. This methodology and platform were then applied to two pilot case studies at border sites: the Italian-Slovenian border and the Slovenian-Austrian border. This enabled the necessary data to be evaluated at the selected sites, the procedures to be tested, and seismic, flood and multi-risk assessments to be carried out. The platform facilitated the visualisation, storage and updating of data, models and documentation, as well as the representation of damage and impact data using a common metric approach. Eucentre participated in the project as a member of the CI3R consortium.
