One of the biggest challenges for engineers and civil protection agencies after an earthquake is quickly assessing damaged structures to determine their potential use.
This is made even more difficult in international emergency situations.
The MATILDA (MultinATIonaL module on Damage Assessment and Countermeasures) project, in which Eucentre participated, focused on designing and implementing a multinational macro-module for assessing building safety and defining countermeasures in such situations.
This module is based on experience developed within the DrHouse project, which was funded by the European Commission. The main results of this project included designing, implementing, training on and testing the Build-Safe macro-module.

While Build-Safe included Italian resources (the Department of Civil Protection, the Eucentre Foundation, the Fire Brigade and the Italian Regions), the intention behind MATILDA was to give the macro-module a multinational dimension.
The multicultural nature of the project made training and exercises essential. For this reason, the project included training courses organised in the participating countries and focusing on technical activities, cultural sensitivity and international emergencies.
