Eucentre at the 18th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering: An appointment not to be missed in Milan

21/06/2024Andrea Paoli

From 30 June to 5 July 2024, Milan will host the 18th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (WCEE2024), an event of extraordinary importance that marks the return of this prestigious event to Italy after 50 years. The event, in which the EUCENTRE Foundation actively participates as a key partner, will be held at the Allianz MiCo conference centre and will be attended by some 4000 experts worldwide. The aim is to share knowledge and innovations and discuss the latest techniques and technologies in earthquake engineering.

A Historic and Significant Return

Organised in collaboration between ANIDIS (National Association of Earthquake Engineering), IAEE (International Association for Earthquake Engineering) and AIM Group International, WCEE2024 represents not only a return to Italy after the 1973 edition in Rome, but also a symbol of tradition and progress. The choice of Milan as host city was the result of a successful bid, prevailing over other major cities such as Montreal, Lyon, New Delhi and Auckland. This success is due to the support of national and international scientific bodies, including the EUCENTRE Foundation.

A Rich and Diversified Programme

WCEE2024 will offer a programme rich in scientific and cultural content. There will be 150 technical sessions, 13 plenary lectures and around 100 exhibitors. The keynote speakers will include several internationally renowned figures.

The opening ceremony, scheduled for 1 July at 9.30 a.m., will be attended by important institutional figures, including the Minister for Civil Protection and Sea Policies Sebastiano Musumeci, the Head of the Civil Protection Department Fabrizio Curcio, the President of Italian Public Works Council Massimo Sessa, the President of the Lombardia Region Attilio Fontana, the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala and Senator Alessandra Gallone.

High Prestige Social Events

There will be no lack of prestigious cultural and social events. The opening night will be held at La Scala Theater on 1 July with the opera ‘Turandot‘ performance, offering participants an unforgettable experience in the heart of Italian culture. On 4 July, Superstudio Maxi will instead host the conference party, a unique opportunity to socialise in an elegant and innovative atmosphere. All information about the programme and events can be found here.

Technical visits

During WCEE2024, exclusive technical visits will be organised, allowing participants to explore cutting-edge research and engineering practices, enriching the experience with unique insights. These include a visit to our laboratories on Friday 05.

The Allianz MiCo: A state-of-the-art Congress Centre

Located in the heart of the modern Citylife area, the Allianz MiCo is Europe’s largest conference centre and will provide an ideal setting for WCEE2024. With its capacity to host large-scale events and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, MiCo will guarantee an unrivalled experience for all participants.

An Unmissable Event for the Earthquake Engineering Community

WCEE2024 represents a unique opportunity for engineers, researchers, practitioners and policymakers to exchange views on issues of global relevance, promoting collaboration and progress in earthquake engineering. Attended by some 4000 participants from over 80 countries, the conference will be a global meeting point for exchanging ideas and technological innovations.
