PAOLO MORANDI

Department Construction and Infrastructure

Paolo Morandi is structural engineer and senior researcher at the EUCENTRE Foundation in the Department of Structures and Infrastructure. He obtained his PhD (2006) and MSc (2003) degree in Earthquake Engineering at the ROSE School and IUSS of Pavia after completing his BSc (2001) in Civil Engineering at the University of Pavia. He obtained the National Academic Qualification as Associate Professor in Structural Engineering.
His main scientific and professional interests are in field of the seismic engineering and structural design, assessment and reduction of seismic risk, mainly focusing on masonry and rc buildings and masonry arch bridges. He has been responsible of research projects funded by the European Union, by the industry and by the Italian Department of Civil Protection. He is author of more than 100 scientific publications and serves as reviewer for the major international journals in earthquake engineering. He has actively contributed to the revision of the Italian and European structural norms (OPCM3274, OPCM 3431, NTC2008, NTC2018, EC6 and EC8) regarding the design of masonry buildings and infills. He is member of the CIS-UNI of SC6, member of PT4 of CEN TC250/SC6 (EN 1996-2) and Italian delegate in WG2 of CEN TC250/SC6 (EN 1996-3). He is co-author of the SAM-II, program for non-linear seismic analyses of masonry and rc buildings, currently implemented in the software Pro_SAM. He is co-inventor of an innovative seismic-resisting masonry infill system with sliding joints, which has been granted by an industrial European patent. Since 2004, he is lecturer at the University of Pavia in the course on structural design and rehabilitation of masonry buildings and he was speaker in more than 80 courses for professionals. He was involved, as team responsible, at the damage surveys after the main seismic events that have struck Italy since 2004 (Salò-2004, l’Aquila-2009, Emilia-2012, Central Italy-2016/2017), mainly focusing on strategic and relevant buildings.
