From May 12th to 18th, 2025, Monza will host EMERLab 2025, an event dedicated to the culture of safety and seismic risk prevention. Organised by the Municipality of Monza, in collaboration with Protezione Civile Regione Lombardia, Prefettura di Monza e Brianza, and the Eucentre Foundation, the initiative will take place at the school complex via Santa Maria Pelletier, involving students, citizens, professionals, and Civil Protection operators.
One of the main events at the event was the traveling exhibition ‘Earthquakes and Structures: How to Mitigate the Effects of Earthquakes,’ organised by the Eucentre Foundation, with the contribution of the National Civil Protection Department.
EMERLab 2025: a week dedicated to seismic safety and prevention
EMERLab 2025 was created to raise awareness of natural hazards, particularly seismic risk, through educational experiences, training, and practical demonstrations. The event is aimed at the school world and the general public, encouraging a wider dissemination of the safety culture.
During the week, it will be possible to participate in technical seminars, conferences, and operational activities to improve emergency management skills.
Earthquakes and Structures exhibition: Knowing to Prevent
The exhibition route
The exhibition ‘Earthquakes and Structures’ represents a unique opportunity to explore the issues related to seismic risk in Italy. An itinerary guided by experts in earthquake engineering will be illustrated:
- The characteristics of the main earthquakes occurring in the country.
- Structural vulnerabilities of different existing building types.
- Methodologies and mitigation measures to reduce seismic risk.
- The latest technological innovations in the field of structural safety.
The aim is to raise awareness of the importance of seismic prevention and provide valuable knowledge tools to improve the resilience of the building stock.
The Seismulator seismic simulator
At the end of the exhibition, it will be possible to experience an earthquake thanks to the Seismulator, an advanced seismic simulator. Participants will be able to experience the difference in structural response during a seismic shock under three different conditions:
- On the ground floor of a conventional building.
- On the fifth floor of a traditional reinforced concrete structure.
- In a building with seismic isolation.
This simulation provides a concrete understanding of the importance of earthquake-resistant design techniques and engineering solutions for protecting people and property.
Events and technical seminars at EMERLab 2025
Training for students, citizens, and civil protection workers
In addition to the exhibition, EMERLab 2025 offers a series of events and educational activities:
- Seminars and meetings aimed at students to raise awareness of risk management among the younger generation.
- Afternoon sessions are open to the public, with free access to the simulator.
- Technical seminars for sector professionals were organised with the Order of Engineers of the Province of Monza and Brianza.
- Operational exercises and certified courses for civil protection operators.
The activities will enable participants to acquire practical and theoretical skills for emergencies.
How to participate in the exhibition and experience the earthquake
Participation in the exhibition “Earthquakes and Structures: How to Mitigate the Effects of Earthquakes” and the experience with the Seismulator are free of charge.
Registration is required via the special registration form for school and organised groups.
For individuals, simply fill in the fields relating to class and school, entering ‘private’ and always indicating the number of participants.
